How to add products

Hi, my name is Henry and I'm a learning designer at Wix.

Over the next eight lessons, you'll learn how to set up your Wix eCommerce store from the ground up.

We'll be using my own eCommerce store as an example.

See, I run NOUS, an online clothing store selling streetwear, cosmetics and accessories.

By the end of this course, your online store will be ready to start selling, and we'll have covered some best practices to set up your business for success, along the way.

In this lesson, we're gonna start with the most important element of your store - the products you sell.

Now, whether you're importing from another platform, starting from scratch or already have a product catalogue, I'll walk you through how to add products here and offer some best practices for maximizing sales in your product pages.

Let's jump in.

Now, you will need to have Wix Stores installed, so you'll see these eCommerce tabs on the left-hand side of your dashboard if you do.

If you don't see these tabs, then you can add Wix Stores by going to Apps and then App Market and searching for Wix Stores.

Now, if you have products on another platform and you wanna migrate them to Wix, you can use the Cart2Cart app.

All you gotta do is go into the App Market and search for Cart2Cart.

And you're gonna see it right here, you just need to install that.

Now, Cart2Cart will take your entire product catalogue and migrate it into Wix, including all the associated data that comes with it.

Now, if you have a product catalogue that you wanna upload to Wix, all you've gotta do is go to Store Products and then Products and then go to "Import Multiple Products To Your Store".

Now, your CSV file will have to match the CSV template that we have, so just download that CSV file here and make sure that yours matches.

Then you can just upload it here.

Now, if you wanna upload your products individually, just click here and go to New Products.

Then you'll be prompted to indicate whether you're selling a physical or a digital product.

I'm selling clothes, so I'm gonna choose physical, but the process is essentially the same for both.

Now, if you're looking for products to sell, you can get started with a dropshipping company that will handle the sourcing and shipping of products for you.

Dropshipping can be a really great way to enter the eCommerce market or just to expend your existing product lines.

To see what you can sell, check out Modalyst here in the dashboard, just under Find Products To Sell.

Now, I've also linked to a dropshipping guide in the Resources tab if you wanna learn more.

Alright, so let's add a product.

So from the dashboard, go back to Products, go to New Product, and I'm gonna choose Physical.

Now the first thing to add in is your product name.

Mine is called a Unisex Pullover.

Next, we're gonna add some images.

Now there are some best practices to bear in mind: JPEGs are usually preferred, because they're low data and usually much smaller than their PNG equivalent.

However, there are two cases that PNG files might be better, and that's if the image has any transparent parts, and when extreme quality and sharpness is needed.

So, for example, images with small texts, or rich color gradients.

Now, I'm gonna go here and add some of the photos that I made earlier.

Okay, so, what you're gonna wanna have is a minimalist product photo, and that's just the product in good lighting against a contrasting background that allows is to stand out, like a solid white background.

But you're also gonna wanna have a lifestyle image, and that's an image showing the product in a space or with someone using it.

It's like a relatable scene that will allow your customers to imagine themselves using the product and experiencing it in their own lives.

So I'm gonna add these here.

Awesome.

Now, there's a couple of other things that you might wanna add here.

So, consider adding an image that shows the dimensions of the product, and also bear in mind that the dimensions can be written in the product description.

Also consider using a high-quality video that can help people to better visualize the product.

Right, now, the last thing we need to talk about with images is alt text.

So, you can help Google better understand your images by adding alt text.

And it's just a brief description of your images that improves your site's search engine optimization, or SEO.

And it also improves accessibility.

So to add it, you just go up to these three dots here, and go to Edit Alt Text For Images.

And then you wanna add alt text for every image.

So, for this lifestyle image I'm just gonna write something really simple like "Model wearing purple NOUS pullover".

And that's all it has to be.

Alright, next up, we are going to edit the product info.

So the product name, it's super simple - just clearly state what the product is.

And here, you can add a Ribbon.

So that's really good to set a product apart, like indicating that it's a new arrival, or a seasonal addition.

So, I'm gonna say that this is on sale.

And add that.

Now, if we scroll down a little bit, you can add a Brand attribute in this box.

Now, although this won't appear to your customers, it will help them search when they're looking for a specific brand, and it will help keep your products organized in search results.

So next time you have another product from the same brand, you can just select it from the drop-down menu.

Now it's time to talk about the product descriptions.

Product descriptions are important for SEO.

They should be unique, so don't use the manufacturer's descriptions, because other sites may use them as well, so just write your own.

Alright, so here's one that I've already made.

Now, you wanna make sure that you write descriptions that are clear and easy to read.

So put the customer in view of owning the items.

Stuff like: "The perfect sweater for all the weather".

And also, clearly describe the features of your product, as well as outline why it's a good choice.

Remember, this is your sales page.

Mention in the description what the product is made from, especially if it aligns with your store's brand values.

So, cruelty-free, organic, vegan, locally sourced, all that good stuff.

Now also, do plug in keywords and think about what your potential customers will search for in finding a specific product.

You don't need to force it or add any extra keywords without context.

So, for example, a customer might be looking for a "red, legendary sweatshirt".

By adding those words into your description, you give your customer a better chance of finding that product when they search.

And remember, if you write informative, descriptive texts - keywords will be implemented naturally.

Now, you can also add product dimensions if they're relevant, down here in the Additional Info section, along with care instructions and policies and warranties and shipping.

Alright, next up, it's pricing.

So, it's pretty self-explanatory - here you can just enter the price that your customers are going to pay for the product.

And down here - it's optional, but for your own reference - you can enter the cost of goods, which is the amount it costs for you to make or buy the product, and the profit margin is gonna calculate automatically.

Now bear in mind, this is not displayed to customers.

Awesome.

So now we're gonna scroll down to our Product Options.

So, if your product comes in different sizes, colors, materials or other variations - be sure to add product options so customers can choose the option that they want.

Now, if none of your products have variants, feel free to move on to the next section, Inventory.

So, if you do have options, you just hit Add Options and then you can add in, let's say, Color.

Now, mine comes in three colors: purple, red, and turquoise.

Awesome. I just hit Add and you can see that those populate here.

Now I've also got three sizes: small, medium, and large.

Hit Add.

And now, if I go down to Manage Pricing and Inventory for Variants I can actually see every single variant that I have and I can edit each one of them individually.

So, for example, let's say one of mine costs less than another, I can put -5 and then the price of that item is going to automatically update.

And then, let's say, because I know it costs less, it costs $20 instead of $25, I can update my Cost of Goods for that item as well.

You can also add in your SKU or Stock Keeping Unit.

So, for this, I know it's "NSCN102331", and then I can decide whether it's In Stock or Out of Stock.

And finally, I can add the product weight.

And this will be really useful later on when we're talking about shipping.

Awesome.

And down here you can manage all of those variants that you just set up.

If you don't have this information now, you can always come back later.

Uploading your products is an important step to creating your online store.

In our next lesson, we'll talk about creating collections to better organize your catalogue.

See you there.
